Back when the M stood for Music and not MORONIC

If you’re a child of the ‘80s like me, then you grew up watching MTV but before you skip this post, let me take you back to when MTV actually stood for Music Television and not MORONIC. MTV started out as an all music channel broadcasting videos 24/7 thus the name Music Television. At around the late ‘80s, early ‘90s Hip Hop was booming and becoming popular amongst teens.

MTV started to have a Hip Hop section to their show and ended up calling it YO! MTV RAPS.  The show was 2 hours long and was hosted by Fab-5 Freddy, Ed Lover and Doctor Dré (not to be confused by Dr. Dre of NWA Fame). The show ran for 7 years and had solidified itself in pop culture as we know it. YO! MTV RAPS helped certain Hip Hop groups establish themselves as hardcore rappers such as Public Enemy, N.W.A. and Ice T.

Now that we got the history lesson out of the way, I love hip hop music because of the content that the rappers rap about, a listener such as myself can relate to, but that’s not how it is anymore. The Hip Hop market nowadays is oversaturated with artists, producers and even labels. The mainstream Hip Hop is very materialistic in its content and you can’t relate to it. Basically, what I’m trying to say is, Hip Hop and the artists nowadays are straight garbage.

So when I heard that MTV will air a 20th Anniversary show of YO! MTV RAPS, I was excited especially when I heard that Fab-5 Freddy, Ed Lover and Doctor Dré are going to host it again. The artists that are going to be on the show are old school but are still relevant in the mainstream like Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe and Ice Cube. I can tolerate that, but here is where it gets wack and starts pissing me off!

The show will only be aired once at midnight on December 3rd and it’s a half hour long show only. There will be only so much music videos and talking segments they can have in 30 minutes. And on top of all of that, Wiz Khalifa is going to be on the show. Why is Wiz Khalifa on the show?!? He has nothing to do with old school Golden Era Hip Hop music and is far from being in the same category as artists like Rakim or 2Pac. It’s stuff like this that TV industry reps know how to do to kill off the hype. If you feel the same way or you actually think the show will still rock like its 1993 then feel free to post a comment, otherwise, this is Livin’ Large and you’ve been Largely Livin’
